Psalms 85-87

Would you look at Psalm 86 with me today.

What God do you worship? David makes a statement in this Psalm in verse 8, “There is none like you among the gods, O lord.”

David acknowledges that there are other gods (little “g” god’s), but he says that there are none like our God (Big “G”).

I want to plead with you this morning to examine your heart and see if there are any little “g” gods in your heart; any idols that you worship and to turn to the one true living God who alone is worthy of worship. And the only one who can save!

In verse 5, David says that our God is “good and forgiving” and “steadfast in love.” David says that our God “answers” when we call on him in the day of trouble (verses 6-7).

David says that our God created the nations, and all the nations will one day come and worship before Him (verse 9). He says that our God does great and wondrous things and that He alone is God (verse 10).  David says our God holds truth and he will teach us truth so that we can walk in His ways. David says that our God is our deliverer and will saves us from death (verse 13).

What God do you worship? Can they compare to God, who alone is God?

I think about the gods that we worship and how they are nothing like our God. We worship money, but money is not loving or forgiving; in fact money enslaves, it forsakes, it abandons, it makes you chase after it. But God is steadfast and forgiving; He is patient and our deliverer. I think about pleasure and sexual desires that can become a god. But these, outside of God’s perfect design, leave us satisfied only for a moment, but then leave us feeling alone, unloved, dirty, lost. But not our God! Our God delivers, saves, washes us clean of sin, and makes us white as snow.

Most of all our God saves us from death through faith in His son Jesus. No other god that we worship can make that promise. Think about it: no other god, whether it is an idol, or another god’s religion can promise deliverance from death based solely on faith and not on works! David says in verse 13 “for great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.” LOVE IS WHY! God has saved us from death through His son Jesus

David says in verse 9, “all nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O lord.” This sounds familiar doesn’t it. Philippians 2:10-11 says that, “at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” And again, in Revelation 7:9-10, “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

You see, you can worship whatever god you chose right now, but one thing is true: that one day every knee will bow and worship the one true God because He alone is worthy of all of our our worship! He created us out of love. He chases after us out of love. He forgives us out of love. He is patient with us because of His love. He saves us because of His love! Even through we run from Him, and sin against Him! He is still steadfast in love! Turn your heart to Jesus and worship the one true living God!
