Today Psalm 42 really spoke to my heart.
Do you feel like you are being unfaithful when you mourn? Sometimes I go through seasons where I feel like God is not near to me and I feel so broken in my heart and soul. I don’t know why this happens, or what brings it on, but to be honest they can be some dark times in my heart. I can get so low that I literally cry in my quiet time with God, asking questions like, “why” and “where are you, God.” It’s a deep time of mourning for me. If you ever feel like this, I want you to know that you are not alone. David experienced these same kinds of emotions and feelings. Look at this psalm and you will see what David does in the midst of this season of mourning.
I love the vulnerability and transparency of David in this Psalm. Clearly, David is in mourning. He talks about his soul longing for the presence of God in verse 1. In verse 3 he says his tears have been his food night and day. He questions in verses 5 and 11, “why are you cast down, O my soul.”
Clearly David is going through something. Look and see what David does in order to help him in the midst of a time of mourning. He says in verse 6, “my soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you.” David then goes on to remember who God is, and His provision of salvation in times past. He says also in verses 5 and 11, in confidence to himself, “Hope in God, For I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.”
Sometimes when you walk through a season of sadness, mourning, trials and hardships, it is hard to see the presence of God in the midst of it, isn’t it? A good practice to remember is to look back on previous trials and seasons of mourning, and remember how God brought you through them! It’s ok to mourn. Jesus actually says in Matthew 5 “blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Just be comforted by the fact that God is with you, he will never leave you nor forsake you! Hope in the fact that God is in fact your salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
God gave up His son to die on the cross so that you would know how much He loves you! Do you think God would sacrifice his son on the cross only to abandon you in the midst of your trials now? Absolutely not! God is madly in love with you and He is with you in every season! Hope in God, for YOU will again praise him, YOUR salvation and YOUR God (verse 11). Read that verse and say it over your life in confidence!
