Psalms 25-27

Chapter 27 is our focus for today.

What is it that your heart seeks after? What is the “one thing” that you seek after most? Take a minute and reflect on your life up until this point. Is there something that sticks out that you have been seeking after? Maybe it’s to be loved or liked, maybe it’s to have a feeling of safety and security, maybe it’s control, maybe it’s money, pleasure, power or authority, approval, a sense of purpose? I don’t know what it is, but if we were all honest, there may be an over arching theme of something we have sought after all of our lives.

One thing I love about David, who is the author of this psalm, is his obsession with God. David challenges me to take an honest look at my heart and think about how much I truly love and seek after God.

David says in verse 4 of this psalm, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.” in verse 8 David says, “You have said, ‘seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

When David says that he seeks to dwell in the house of God, he is saying that he desires to be in the presence of God, because in David’s day, the presence of God was thought to dwell in His physical temple. So, David is saying here that the one thing that his heart desires, is to be in the presence of God and to commune with God.

Look at the last two verses of this Psalm.

Psalm 27: 13-14

13 I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!

David has confidence that what he seeks after will become a reality; that one day he will look at the beauty of his Heavenly Father and his faith will become sight! He may have to wait on the Lord, and live in faith until that reality, but he is confident that what he seeks will come to pass.

So what does this mean for you and me? Are you seeking after something that in the end will not bring fulfillment? Do you have confidence in what you seek after; that it is the right thing to seek after? David sought after God because he knew that God ultimately was his salvation and there is nothing else that could save him! Jesus Christ is our salvation! He is our Light! He is our hope! He is our strong hold! He is the fulfillment of all of God’s promises and the fulfillment of what David sought after! The presence of the living God!

What is the “one thing” your heart seeks after?! Oh that it would be Jesus! Seek first His kingdom!
