Psalms 16-18

Where do you find security? I think that when we walk through a trial or hard circumstances, our idols are revealed. What I mean by that is, we find security in the idols of our lives and when those idols prove to be inadequate to produce all that we need in life, through some tough circumstance…we are left questioning whether or not those idols are worthy of our worship.

For instance, right now everything we thought we could find security in, is being challenged; Our jobs, our economy, our faith practices, etc. etc.

In Psalms 16 David starts out by saying, “Preserve me O God for in YOU I take refuge.” When David says “Preserve me O God” the Hebrew word is more so an acknowledgment of God’s preservation rather than a plea for preservation…He is saying, “God you preserve my life and in you I find my security.” It is a statement of confidence rather than a request. God is where David finds security because he is confident that it is God who preserves his life.

In verse 4, David continues and talks about the sorrows of those who follow “other gods (little “g”)” and how he will not follow those gods.

Psalms 16: 7-11

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Don’t miss verses 7-11! David says he sets God out in front of him and therefore will not be shaken! David sets the true living God, who alone is worthy of worship, out in front and follows Him alone! Look what David can say in confidence because of this…

  • Verse 8: “I will not be shaken”
  • Verse 9: “My heart is glad and my whole being rejoices”
  • Verse 9: “my flesh dwells secure”
  • Verse 10: “God will not abandon me”
  • Verse 11: “In God there is fullness of joy.”

Here is what this means for you and for me! Whatever it is that you find security in…if it is not in Christ Jesus…then it will never give you the full amount of security, peace, and joy that you are looking for. It will always come up short! Set Jesus first in your life as your foundation that you find security in and then you will truly and fully experience an unshakable peace, joy, and fullness of life! This is God’s will and desire for your life…Do you trust Him today?
