Today I wanted to take a closer look at Chapter 10. Do you ever feel like God is far away from you? That God is hiding from you? Do you ever feel like even though you try to be faithful to God, he doesn’t see you or hear you? Not only that, but people that don’t have faith in God seem to prosper! Those who ignore God do what they want and have no consequences.
If you look at the progression of this Psalm you can see that the psalmist is facing a similar dilemma. In verse 1 he asks God why He has hidden himself. Then he begins to talk about “the wicked.” They are prideful, they oppress the poor, their mouths are filled with cursing and lies, they even think in their hearts that “there is no God.” Yet, in verse 5 he says the wicked, “his ways prosper at all times.”
But then, in verse 14, the psalmist says “But you (God) do SEE.” In vs. 16-18 he says “the Lord is king FOREVER and EVER…the nations perish from his land. O Lord, you HEAR the desire of the afflicted; you will STRENGTHEN their heart; you will incline your ear…”
Psalms 10: 16-18
16 The Lord is king forever and ever;
the nations perish from his land.
17 O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
I want you to see what changed in the psalmists’ heart. He remembered that God is king forever. God reigns forever and has an eternal plan! Those who have faith in God remember that whatever we face on this earth is momentary in light of eternity! We place our hope and faith in the fact that God is working all things for our good and for His glory! Sometimes we may not see it or see HIM in the moment, but we must remember and set our eyes on things that are eternal! Then we will remember that God is the God of the fatherless and the oppressed. He is just and in the end we will see His righteous and just plan unveiled when Jesus returns!
